August 29-30, 2009 Mt. Adams climb via South Route

Saturday morning we gathered at the Mt. Adams RS and after getting our permits we drove up to the Cold Springs campground trailhead.
The hike to Lunch Counter started at about 12:30 and we arrived at 5 pm. We set up camp and after dinner we settled in for the night. The weather was cloudy and very windy. The wind howled pretty much all night with little relief.
Sunday morning we got up and hit the trail about 7:30. The snow fields weren't as large as in 2004 but Travis and I used all we could find to crampon up the mountain. The rest of the group bore to left of the snowfield above Lunch Counter to use a more rocky path. Travis and I were at Piker's Peak (false summit) about 9:45 am. After waiting for the group we decided to go ahead and summit. The weather was cloudy all day with only the occasional small glimpse of the mountain. Once we left Pikers Peak the wind really increased and by the time we got to the summit it was howling at least 50 mph. After a few quick pictures at the summit shelter (not really any shelter as the dilapidated building is filled with ice) we headed down. We met the rest of our group just as they were starting the steep section to the summit. Travis and I headed down to camp and took a nap. After breaking camp we headed out. It took about 3 hours to got back to the trailhead at 6 pm.
